Upgrading the hardware running your SQL Server to a space-efficient modular Dell EMC modern environment can help your company achieve a great deal of database work in a small amount of space. With the Dell Express Flash technology, adding a caching solution such as Samsung AutoCache can make the environment even more efficient.
In the PT labs, we ran a mixed database workload on six Dell EMC PowerEdge FC630 servers, powered by Intel Xeon E5-2667 processors, in three PowerEdge FX2 enclosures. The solution included the QLogic QLE2692 16Gb FC adapter with StorFusion Technology, Dell EMC Storage SC9000 all-flash storage, and Dell EMC PowerEdge Express Flash NVMe Performance PCIe SSDs.
With no caching solution, the 36 SQL Server 2016 VMs on the six servers achieved a total of 431,839 orders per minute while an Oracle workload ran on 12 VMs. When we added a caching solution to accelerate the SQL database volumes, the performance across the 36 SQL Server 2016 VMs doubled to 871,580. These numbers show the power of server-side caching to alleviate pressure on the storage array allowing you to get even more out of the Dell EMC modern environment.
Upgrading key components in servers can significantly improve performance and capacity. The report tested upgrading components in Dell PowerEdge servers. It found that upgrading to newer Dell PowerEdge R720 servers with Intel Xeon and SSD components, Windows Server 2012, and 10GbE networking supported 4.5 times as many VMs as the older Dell PowerEdge R710 servers. Each individual component upgrade, such as the processor, storage, or network card, increased performance. But upgrading all components together maximized the number of supported VMs, database transactions, and email users.
The PowerEdge R730 is a versatile 2U rack server that supports a wide range of demanding workloads. It features the latest Intel Xeon processors with up to 22 cores, support for up to 3TB of memory, and various storage and I/O expansion options. Conclusion
If your company is struggling with underperforming infrastructure, upgrading to 16th Generation Dell PowerEdge servers running VCF 5.1 could be just what you need to handle more database throughput and reduce vSAN latencies. We found that a Dell PowerEdge R760 server cluster running VCF 5.1 processed over 78 percent more TPM and 79 percent more NOPM than a Dell PowerEdge R750 server cluster running VCF 4.5. It’s also worth noting that the PowerEdge R750 cluster bottlenecked on vSAN storage, with max write latency at 8.9ms. For reference, the PowerEdge R760 cluster clocked in at 3.8ms max write latency. This higher latency is due in part to the single disk group per host on the moderately configured PowerEdge R750 cluster, while the better-configured PowerEdge R760 cluster supported four disk groups per host. As an additional benefit to IT admins, we also found that the embedded VMware Aria Operation adapter provided useful infrastructure insights.

On-premises AI approaches: The advantages of a turnkey solution, HPE Private ...Principled Technologies
In this paper, we have examined the considerations around public cloud versus on-premises for AI, and then contrasted three on-premises approaches available to buyers today: build-your-own, reference architecture + services, and turnkey.
On-premises solutions are a strong option worth considering for deploying your AI workloads, especially if you want complete control over sensitive data. Compared to the public cloud, an on-premises solution grants greater control over data protection and location, with the potential to increase the security and the performance of your AI applications.
Many organizations, however, also want to give their data services teams a more complete, cloud-like experience while maintaining this security and control. While a validated reference architecture + services approach such as Dell AI Factory simplifies deployment by offering validated components, it leaves management, integration, and orchestration to the customer, that company’s services group, or a third party. In contrast, the turnkey HPE Private Cloud AI provides a pre-validated stack with hardware and AI toolsets, integrated data services software, and a cloud delivery model for administrators, data engineers, and data scientists—all of which lets organizations hit the ground running. It combines ease of procurement, setup, and management with a rich selection of out-of-box AI software and data tools, while providing the control and security of an on-premises deployment. For organizations seeking an on-premise AI implementation that comes with a built-in private-cloud experience, HPE Private Cloud AI is a stronger choice than build-your-own or reference architecture + services solutions.

Testing revealed that this server can be a great AI entry point for small organizations or departments, while upgrading to a CPU + GPU configuration could help them scale to support more users
Conclusion
GenAI is here to stay: 67 percent of business leaders in one Deloitte survey said that their organizations planned to invest further in GenAI initiatives,10 and GenAI chatbots are an interesting possibility for companies of all sizes. While larger companies with dozens or hundreds of users probably will opt for solutions involving GPUs, small and medium businesses and groups within larger organizations can enjoy the benefits of GenAI using a server with just a CPU—while retaining the option of upgrading to a GPU when and if the need arises.
To demonstrate this, we tested two configurations of single-socket Dell PowerEdge R6615 servers for an in-house GenAI chatbot use case. The configuration with only a 64-core AMD EPYC 9534 processor supported nine simultaneous users with a response time threshold of 5 seconds and a response time threshold percentage of 95. When we added an NVIDIA L4 GPU, this server was able to support 23 simultaneous users. (Because a typical user is likely to engage with the chatbot for only part of their workday, these configurations are likely to support even larger numbers of effective users.)
These results demonstrate that the Dell PowerEdge R6615 server powered by a 64-core AMD EPYC 9534 processor is a strong choice for small and medium organizations and departments in enterprises who want to develop in-house GenAI chatbots at an affordable price point. When the number of likely simultaneous users is in the single digits, the CPU-only configuration of this server provides a good user experience. As the number of users grows, companies can easily scale the server’s capabilities by adding a GPU and support more than twice as many users.

Boosting MySQL with Vector Search -THE VECTOR SEARCH CONFERENCE 2025 .pdfAlkin Tezuysal
As the demand for vector databases and Generative AI continues to rise, integrating vector storage and search capabilities into traditional databases has become increasingly important. This session introduces the *MyVector Plugin*, a project that brings native vector storage and similarity search to MySQL. Unlike PostgreSQL, which offers interfaces for adding new data types and index methods, MySQL lacks such extensibility. However, by utilizing MySQL's server component plugin and UDF, the *MyVector Plugin* successfully adds a fully functional vector search feature within the existing MySQL + InnoDB infrastructure, eliminating the need for a separate vector database. The session explains the technical aspects of integrating vector support into MySQL, the challenges posed by its architecture, and real-world use cases that showcase the advantages of combining vector search with MySQL's robust features. Attendees will leave with practical insights on how to add vector search capabilities to their MySQL systems.

National Fuels Treatments Initiative: Building a Seamless Map of Hazardous Fu...Safe Software
The National Fuels Treatments Initiative (NFT) is transforming wildfire mitigation by creating a standardized map of nationwide fuels treatment locations across all land ownerships in the United States. While existing state and federal systems capture this data in diverse formats, NFT bridges these gaps, delivering the first truly integrated national view. This dataset will be used to measure the implementation of the National Cohesive Wildland Strategy and demonstrate the positive impact of collective investments in hazardous fuels reduction nationwide. In Phase 1, we developed an ETL pipeline template in FME Form, leveraging a schema-agnostic workflow with dynamic feature handling intended for fast roll-out and light maintenance. This was key as the initiative scaled from a few to over fifty contributors nationwide. By directly pulling from agency data stores, oftentimes ArcGIS Feature Services, NFT preserves existing structures, minimizing preparation needs. External mapping tables ensure consistent attribute and domain alignment, while robust change detection processes keep data current and actionable. Now in Phase 2, we’re migrating pipelines to FME Flow to take advantage of advanced scheduling, monitoring dashboards, and automated notifications to streamline operations. Join us to explore how this initiative exemplifies the power of technology, blending FME, ArcGIS Online, and AWS to solve a national business problem with a scalable, automated solution.

in the same amount of rack space, which increases the
overall storage density of your data center and helps limit
data center sprawl.

3. Gain insight from document-
based distributed data sooner
We ran YCSB workload B on each three-node
solution with three YCSB driver VMs to generate
the test load. The current-generation Dell EMC
PowerEdge R640 servers, powered by 2nd
Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors and
using two Dell EMC Express Flash NVMe P4610
SSDs in the additional drive bays, delivered
36 percent more YCSB operations per second
(OPS) than the previous-generation solution.
The performance boost could allow more of your
business units to run in-depth analysis without
experiencing slowdowns or bottlenecks while
also helping your organization accumulate data.
Have more CPU headroom to add workloads
The added drive bays that the Dell EMC PowerEdge R640 offers could allow your organization to boost data
analysis workload performance with additional SSDs. For our tests, we configured each server in both solutions
with eight SATA SSDs and then increased the current-generation solution’s storage capacity by adding two Dell
EMC Express Flash NVMe P4610 SSDs in the available drive bays of each server.
NVMe SSDs typically increase processor utilization, but the
NVMe drives we added to the current-generation servers
didn’t affect processor utilization when we ran the data analysis
workload in the MongoDB database. The combination of 2nd
Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors and additional Dell
EMC NVMe SSDs in each current-generation server delivered
better performance for the data analytics workload than the
previous-generation solution while utilizing a lower overall
percentage of the processors. By replacing older servers with
the current-generation solution running Dell EMC NVMe SSDs,
your organization could improve the performance of its data
analysis workloads now while simultaneously creating headroom
to run additional workloads. Adding workloads could allow
more users to run data analysis or allow your organization to
save power, cooling, and licensing expenses by consolidating
to fewer current-generation servers.

4. Conclusion
Data-driven decisions require speedy data analysis.
You could be slowing the decision-making process if you
continue to use older servers to run your data analysis
workloads. We found that current-generation Dell EMC
PowerEdge R640 servers with 2nd Generation Intel
Xeon Scalable processors handled more YCSB OPS
than previous-generation servers. Replacing previous-
generation Dell EMC PowerEdge R630 servers with
current-generation PowerEdge R640 servers can deliver
a performance boost that allows more of your business
units to run in-depth analysis more quickly. In addition,
the current-generation servers had more storage drive
bays and adding Dell EMC Express Flash NVMe
P4610 SSDs to increase the solution’s capacity
did not affect the level of server processor
utilization. With more processor headroom,
you could run additional workloads in
the cluster, allowing more business
units to run data analysis.
