According to a LinkedIn survey, the top industries for freelancers are arts and design (46%), media and communication (34%), and business consulting (6%). Within arts and design, the most common roles for freelancers are graphic designer (29%), photographer (20%), and artist (19%). The information technology and program/project management industries each make up only 1% of freelancers.

When we launched the LinkedIn Economic Graph Challenge in October 2014, our goal was to work with the best researchers across the U.S. to help solve some of the world’s most pressing issues of our time, using LinkedIn data. We have selected 12 finalists to work with us. Each team submitted a compelling proposal to utilize LinkedIn data to create economic opportunity. These teams aim to solve problems as diverse as closing employee skill gaps, achieving municipal economic improvements and relieving inequality in the labor market. Their results could potentially positively impact millions of people.

Tech, financial services, marketing & advertising, and media & entertainment lead hiring of tech talent in NYC. 1 in 5 NYC companies currently employ technology talent and nearly 32,000 companies in NYC have hired members with technology skills in 2014. The most common job titles among NYC's technology-skilled members are software developers, information technology generalists, and salespeople. User interface design, Python, mobile development, web development, and C/C++ are the skills most likely to be found among recently employed tech talent in NYC. Graduation rates in technology fields from NYC schools have increased since 2008 but remain far below rates in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Over the course of three months, we analyzed aggregate LinkedIn data from more than 3 million LinkedIn members in the New York City region and 150,000 NYC-based businesses to provide the Tech Talent Pipeline with insights on the current state of the city’s tech industry. This research is now informing the Tech Talent Pipeline team’s decisions on how to deploy $10 million in funding to help NYC schools, government, nonprofits, and companies better prepare New Yorkers for in-demand tech jobs and fuel the continuing growth of NYC tech businesses.
