Neurodiversity vs. neurodivergence
- Managing teams is a tricky balance of flexibility and doing great work whilst helping your team members to be engaged and deliver great results. This is the ultimate goal. As a people manager, you have a fantastic opportunity to build a positive and inclusive culture. How well you do this will very much depend on your approach to inclusion. Did you know that approximately 15% of the world's population is neurodivergent? About 7% are autistic, so the chances are that your team will include neurodivergent employees with autism, ADHD, and other neurotypes. Understanding how different neurotypes work will help you strike the right balance when managing projects and programs. The world of work has largely been shaped by and for the majority of people who are neurotypical, meaning not neurodivergent. This means that neurodivergent employees will often feel uncomfortable in traditional office settings that are open plan, feature harsh lights and a lot of background noise. Helping these team members to manage feelings of overwhelm will create a working environment that they can thrive in.
