- When you're working with a raw file, you're generating settings and it's important to understand where those settings are. For example, if I'm working with the DNG file, the settings are stored inside the DNG. So if I start to move this at the Finder or Windows Explorer level, I don't need to worry about any extra information. However, you'll notice that the file below is the original raw file and with that is a text file, an XMP file. These settings must go with the raw file if you want Adobe Camera Raw to be able to interpret it correctly, or Photoshop, Lightroom, After Effects, anything that uses the Camera Raw engine. These settings and the raw file have to travel together. This is one of the reasons why people tend to make a DNG file because as things are getting passed around or shared by less savvy users, they don't have to worry about those sidecar files getting lost.
