- [Narrator] I want to begin this lesson on the whiteboard, starting with a concept that, as I taught as a Cisco certified instructor for years, often slipped through the cracks when we ever were talking about AAA. Authentication, authorization and accounting. And that is the difference between character mode, or administrative mode, and packet or network mode. Let me tell you what I mean. So here we have a user, which could be an end user or they could be an administrator, and they're going through some type of edge network access device. Okay, we'll call this an NAD. This could be an edge router, whatever your customer premises equipment is. It could be an edge router, it could be a multilayer switch, could be an appliance, right? So like a firewalled appliance. But this this is the access device, right? And then be behind it, of course, you might have like a DMZ or a public access zone, whatever your public servers are in, okay?
