- In this brief lesson, we're going to define attack patterns. In threat modeling, identifying attack patterns is a crucial activity. It'll help us anticipate and defend against potential cyber threats. It's a very important blue team exercise. Attack patterns are documented techniques that describe how adversaries, how threat agents and threat actors, exploit systems or vulnerabilities in software. These patterns provide insights into the attacker's objectives, their steps for execution, also known as the kill chain, and it also helps us expose and determine mitigation strategies. By understanding common attack patterns, we can predict how attackers might approach specific systems or environments. And this knowledge is helpful in developing robust threat models, improving incident response, aligning with the aforementioned Governance, Risk, and Compliance requirements, or GRC compliance.
