Sustainable Development

The Department of Justice is committed to fostering an accessible, fair, and effective justice system that reflects Canadian values and supports sustainable development. Through the Justice Sustainable Development Strategy (JSDS) 2023-2027, the Department incorporates sustainable development principles into its policies and programs, with a focus on climate resilience, accessibility, and equity. Legal advice and services are delivered in alignment with these principles.

Sustainable development considerations are applied where relevant to the Department’s mandate. Activities that have no environmental impact are not subject to sustainable development actions.

Aligned with the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS) 2022-2026, the Department advances key objectives outlined in the JSDS. These include promoting equity and accessibility, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening climate resilience, encouraging responsible resource use, and integrating sustainability into decision-making.

Through these efforts, the Department of Justice supports Canada’s sustainability goals, contributing to the development of an inclusive, resilient, and environmentally responsible justice system.

Strategic Environmental and Economic Assessments (SEEA) at Justice Canada

Justice Canada ensures the implementation of the mandatory Cabinet Directive on Strategic Environmental and Economic Assessments (SEEA) and uses the Climate, Nature, and Economy Lens (CNEL) to evaluate the environmental, economic, and social impacts of departmental proposals and initiatives.
