Create an email thread in a sequence

Use threading to set up your sequence so that each email is sent as a reply to the previous email with the same subject line. This gives your contacts context and allows them to see all their interactions with you in one place.

Before you get started

Before adding email threading to your sequence emails, please note the following: 

  • Sequences threading is only available with a connected Gmail (G Suite) or Office 365 inbox.
  • If you're already emailing a contact prior to enrolling them in a sequence, you cannot continue the thread. You must start a new thread if you want to thread subsequent emails in a sequence.
  • There is a file size limit of 20 MB for files attached to sales emails. When you thread sequences emails, any email attachments will be included in all replies in the thread. This may cause you to hit the file size limit.

Add email threading for new sequence emails

To create a new email to send as a reply to a previous email in a sequence:

  1. In your HubSpot account, navigate to Sales > Sequences.
  2. Hover over the sequence you want to edit, then click Edit.
  3. In the sequence editor, click the + plus icon. Then, click Automated email.
  4. Under Email type, select Reply. If this is the first email in the sequence, you'll only be able to select New thread. For subsequent emails, you can then select Reply.
  5. Under Which email would you like to reply to? select the previous email in the sequence that you want to reply to.
  6. At the bottom, click Next: Add email content.
  7. Continue creating a new email template or using an existing email template.

Add email threading for existing sequence emails

To edit threading for an existing email in a sequence:

  1. In your HubSpot account, navigate to Sales > Sequences.
  2. Select the name of the sequence you want to edit.
  3. In the upper right, click Edit.
  4. To change the threading option for an existing email, click the Actions dropdown and select Edit threading.
  5. In the right panel, change your email type. Then, click Save.

Review your threaded sequence emails 

In the sequence editor, threaded emails that are replies will include a reply icon next to the subject line.

Emails that are replies to previous emails will appear as part of a continuous conversation in the contact's inbox instead of separate email threads. It'll appear similar to regular email threads.
