Shankar Mahadevan x Music AI

We teamed up with Grammy Award-winning Indian music icon Shankar Mahadevan to explore the exciting fusion of AI and India’s musical traditions. The music of India, a powerhouse of artistic influence widely known for its vibrant Bollywood and booming regional film industries, draws from traditions like Carnatic, Hindustani, folk, dance and devotional genres. This richness provided the perfect canvas for exploration using our Music AI Sandbox.

The Sound of AI

We partnered with award-winning musicians and composers. Leveraging the Music AI Sandbox, we integrated their instrumental creations to craft the sonic foundation for Google Cloud Next '25. This project showcases AI elevating and expanding human creative possibilities.

Safety from development to deployment

We believe AI should enhance human creativity, not replace it. We’re working directly with artists to gather feedback and to develop guardrails that address their concerns. By doing this, we ensure this tool empowers creators and helps them realize the possibilities of AI in their work.

We’re also deploying Lyria 2 with our latest privacy, safety and security technologies, including our innovative watermarking tool SynthID — which embeds an imperceptible digital watermark directly into the audio output, making it identifiable as AI-generated content but otherwise imperceptible.

Limitations

While Lyria 2 demonstrates the incredible potential of AI for music generation, we are still working to develop and refine its performance — and to expand its coverage of languages and genres.
